Amsterdam to Rhine Valley

Day 3 starts off with us leaving Amsterdam around 9:30. We play another game on the bus where we have to stand up and introduce ourselves, tell what we are looking forward to on the trip, who we would MFK and tell two truths and one lie where everyone had to guess the lie. That killed a lot of time and we had some laughs and got to know each other even more. I think by day seven we will be taking blood oaths or something.

We eventually got to Saint Goar in the Rhine Valley for a river cruise which would take us past some of the grape growing areas as well as a ton of castles. The wine from this area is apparently expensive because as you can see their fields are on steep mountain faces and they must do all the harvesting by hand.

Here are some of the castles that I snapped with my super zoom (see below). I think there are stories behind most of them but there weren’t any speakers up at the bow so I didn’t hear them. I’m sure something tragic and castley happened at each one of them. Probably involving a princess and her peasant lover being betrayed by Gilbert Gottfried. You know how castles are.

After checking out all the castles and whatnot, we went into town to check out some cuckoo clocks and beer steins. Yep.

The cuckoo clock shop is the largest “free-hanging cuckoo clock” shop in the world. It also has the largest functioning cuckoo clock in the world displayed at it’s entrance. Two actual humans come out when it strikes the hour. Just kidding but it’s seriously huge.

Inside we got a quick history lesson about cuckoo clocks and their origins. They are all hand carved and hand-painted so you can imagine how expensive they are. Also, they are pretty high maintenance. The larger more expensive clocks have to be wound once a week and the smaller, cheaper clocks need to be wound every single day. No thanks!

After I bought a hooded sweatshirt at the cuckoo clock shop (ha!) we went over to the beer stein shop. As I write this I’m looking for the pics of the inside of the shop and apparently they didn’t take. Or I didn’t take them. Either way it was really impressive inside - they had over 3,000 kinds of steins. So I bought a magnet.

Then we had 30 minutes of free time, or as I call it, ice cream time. After the ice cream a bunch of people were sitting on a wall and it looked like a good spot for a pic so we got more people on the wall and then took a pic. This is the result. I’m in the front because I had to run over after setting the timer. Also, I’m important.

We went back to the hotel after this and had some dinner. There was an optional wine-tasting tour which I skipped and now I’m in my room writing this post and getting ready to catch up on some much-needed sleep. They’re really keeping us busy. Tonight I have a room to myself because there are only three guys on this trip that came alone which means we are always going to be rooming with each other and one of us will have his own room each night. It’s pretty sweet actually.

Day 3 down!

  2. Good question! Megan Fox/Paris Hilton/Lady Gaga. Paris Hilton was for money - Greg used the idea and I thought it was good. The other two are self explanatory.

Rhine Valley to Lucerne

Today was mostly a driving day. It was around three hours on the bus in the morning with an hour stop in the afternoon before leaving Germany. I believe it was somewhere in the black forest region but I didn’t get the name of the town because I was sleeping. We took some pics with a cool waterfall and I ate some kind of bratensteinwurst and then we  drove the last few hours to Lucerne. Waterfall action: Ashlee always asks to get in my pictures and then she stands there like I have a gun to her back. She’s so weird. Then we get to Lucerne in the late afternoon and stop at another of Contiki’s partners: Harry’s Swiss Watch Center. They sell Swiss army knives, watches and chocolate at excellent prices. I didn’t take any pictures of this shop because it was boring. Then I went outside to get Swiss Franks out of the ATM since we will be here for a few days and they don’t do the Euro thing. Because they’re independent. Or shady. This was taken near the ATM machine. The girls ask me...

Nice to Chateau

Well we have to leave Nice today. And it’s supposed to be sunny and fantastic. Oh well. Adil had the great idea to go down and see the sunrise before we left since yesterday was kind of a bust. Sunrise was around 6am which isn’t that bad – it’s like a work day – but I was up until 2am so I was pretty tired. I thought about just staying in bed but I would have regretted it and I had plenty of time to sleep on the bus so I rallied and went downstairs. We got there probably 20 minutes early and discovered that our lookout point was actually a homeless person’s bedroom. She was just waking up though so she invited us in for some tea and biscuits. It was nice. As the sunrise got closer, we realized that there was a flaw in our plan: Nice is in a bit of a cove (as is evident in my pictures yesterday) and the sun’s path was not something we considered. I just assumed it was more southerly (sure why not) and over the water. Here I point out Nice on the map. There is no way the sun would make ...

Rome

ROMA! Ok today is going to be nuts. We are starting off with a guided tour of the Vatican which will take about two hours and then we have a free day with which I’m going to see as much of Rome as I can. SPOILER ALERT: I get home at 10:30pm tonight with blisters on my feet. IDIOT ALERT: I was wearing knock-off crocs that I bought at a service station. Let’s start at the Vatican because that’s where we started. This is the entrance. Seems fitting. The line to get in the door goes around the building and out of sight. Being in a group and paying for a guided tour gets us past everyone – it’s worth it. We are told that the Vatican museum is the largest museum in the world – It spans 7 kilometers and 1300 rooms. We soon learn that they weren’t lying. Walking around Vatican city was one of the most overwhelming things I’ve ever done. Not from the heat or the size but from the magnitude and significance of the information. It was mind-numbing. I took some pictures although they don’t do t...
